Spanish Folklore

Please wait a moment while we prepare this page for you.

Spanish folklore is a rich, diverse tapestry born from a deep history of Celtic, Roman, Moorish, and Christian influences. Unlike a singular narrative, it varies heavily by region and ranges from eerie nocturnal myths and magical creatures to heroic legends celebrated during vibrant annual festivals.

Iconic Legends

  • Saint George & The Dragon (Sant Jordi): A famous Catalan legend where a knight named San Jorge (Saint George) slays a fearsome dragon terrorizing a village. According to lore, a red rose sprouted from the dragon's blood, a tale commemorated every April 23rd by exchanging roses.

  • La Santa Compaña: A bone-chilling legend from Galicia involving a cursed living person who is forced to wander the forests at midnight leading a silent, ghostly procession of souls holding candles.

  • El Coco (or El Cuco): The ultimate Spanish "boogeyman". For centuries, parents have sung rhymes and told tales of this shadow-dwelling monster to warn disobedient children that it will come to take them.

Regional Mythical Creatures

  • Las Meigas (Galicia): Galician witches, sometimes described as magical healers, but just as often feared as malicious entities who cast curses and meddle in the affairs of villagers.

  • La Guajona (Cantabria): A terrifying vampiric creature who sneaks into the rooms of healthy children at night to drink their blood using a single, razor-sharp tooth.

  • El Trasco (Asturias/Cantabria): A small, mischievous goblin or spirit that haunts homes, delights in playing tricks, and moves household objects.

Oral Traditions and Fables

Spanish folklore is filled with timeless moral fables passed down through generations. Stories featuring clever animals outwitting one another—such as the classic tale of the boastful little mouse tricked by a sly cat—are staples of Spanish storytelling.
