Hawaiian Spaniard International Conference 2022

The Spanish Hawaiian Heritage Association was formed in 2023, after the inaugural International Congress of Spanish Emigrants to Hawaii and California (1880-1930).

57 Spanish Hawaiian descendants from Arizona, California, Oregon, and Pennsylvania attended the conference. This initial congress was held by Club Universo Extremeño in Jarandilla de la Vera, Coria and Cáceres and Malaga from 10- 26-2022 to 11- 4-2022.

It recognized the 8,000 Spanish emigrants who embarked from the port of Malaga and Gibraltar between 1907 and 1913 bound for the sugar cane plantations of the Hawaiian Islands on the ships; SS Heliopolis SS Orteric SS Willesden, SS Ascot and SS Willesden. Due to difficult conditions on plantations, many families later left for California. Their descendants still live in the state, and across the US.

Primary researchers, and conference organizers were Manuel Trinidad of the University of Extremadura, and Miguel Alba Trujillo, of the University of Malaga.

OBJECTIVES

1. - To analyze the transoceanic emigrations during the first half of the 20th century and their causes, as well as to recover the memory and history of the 8000 Spanish emigrants who embarked in the port of Malaga and Gibraltar between 1907 and 1913 bound for the sugar cane plantations of the Hawaiian Islands in the ships; SS Heliopolis (1907), SS Orteric (1911), SS Willesden (1911), SS Ascot (1913) and SS Willesden (1913).

2.- To recover links between Spain and America. To locate the descendants in California of Spanish emigrants, especially those from Extremadura and Andalusia, and also to locate their relatives in Spain, to create a permanent link on both sides of the oceans.

3. To study and analyze the historical and present situation generated, giving visibility to the Spanish legacy in America, and highlighting the efforts of the Hispanic colony that helped the development of the United States of America.

4. Motivate the promotion of cooperation and development policies between the geographical areas involved in emigration based on the historical debt generated by emigration, such as rural development policies or twinning between cities.

5.- To project Extremadura and Andalusia for tourism in America. Taking into account as a factor of attraction the links with their hometowns of American people who are descendants of Extremadura and Andalusia, which can also help to combat depopulation and meet the demographic challenge.

6. To promote interest in genealogy at school, which has a great tradition in America but is not developed in Spain, so we consider it an important didactic resource for schoolchildren, teaching them to make their family trees so that they have an interest in their ancestors, which represents learning to reconstruct their own history.

7.-. To demand the creation in Extremadura of a permanent Museum on Emigration that recognizes all the traces of the Extremaduran diaspora as well as the great work carried out by the Extremaduran centers around the world to disseminate and collect all the documentation of the emigrants that is part of the documentary heritage of Extremadura.

8.- To promote studies and university cooperation between Spanish and American universities to facilitate social, cultural, and economic relations between California, Extremadura, and Andalucia.
